The occasion is special for both nations “because this year marks the five decades of restoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba, and the 65 anniversary of victory over fascism, said Kenia Serrano, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) that hosts the event.
Without constant support from Moscow, economic and scientific development achieved by the island nation over past 50 years couldn’t have been possible, Serrano added.
Cuba and Russia currently cooperate closely on a wide ragne of issues,and among them are the global economic crisis, climate change and natural disasters, added the official.
Mikhail Kamynin, Russia’s ambassador to Cuba, said bilateral relations are excellent with high-level cooperation achieved in various sectors. (more…)

“There is a 99-percent possibility that the plane had been kidnapped by drug traffickers,” Jorge Belevan, a spokesman for the Aerodiana company, told reporters one day after the aircraft went missing.
Clues have indicated the Cessna type small plane, originally bound for Peru’s famed Nazca Lines, has been diverted to Bolivia or Brazil by the kidnappers, he said.
IDs presented by all the seven passengers aboard have found to be fake, added Belevan.
Authorities have sent nine planes and three ground patrols to search for the missing plane but have so far failed to find it.

The event, held in the western port of Victoria, involves 12 warships more than 8,000 visiting troops from other navies.
It was sunny and locals witnessed all the pomp and ceremony associated with maritime forces worldwide in a full-uniform parade, the unveiling of a Centennial statue called “Homecoming” depicting the reunion of a child and her naval officer father, and a flyover by the famed “Snowbirds” squad from the Canadian Airforce.
With participation of visiting warships from Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand and the United States, Canadian navy chief Dean McFadden said an international fleet review has “always been a circumstance of very great pageantry” and there were few symbols “more powerful than a range of warships at anchor with a reviewing officer going down those ranks.” (more…)
